What Is Commander? A Beginner's Guide to MTG's Most Popular Format (2026)
If you have started playing Magic: The Gathering, you have almost certainly heard people talk about Commander — and for good reason. Also known as EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander), Commander is the most popular way to play Magic in the world. It is social, creative, and endlessly fun. This guide explains what Commander is, how the rules work, and how to build your first Commander deck in 2026 without feeling overwhelmed.
At The Battle Bunker, Commander nights are some of our most welcoming events, and players of all levels are invited. Let's dive in.
What is Commander (EDH)?
Commander is a casual, multiplayer Magic format — usually played with three or four players around a table. What began as a fan-made variant called Elder Dragon Highlander has exploded into Magic's biggest format, loved for its creativity, social play, and big, splashy, memorable moments.
The headline difference from regular Magic: every deck is built around a single legendary creature — your Commander — whose identity shapes your entire strategy.
How do the Commander rules work?
A few rules make Commander unique:
- 100-card deck. Your deck is exactly 100 cards, including your commander.
- Singleton format. Apart from basic lands, you can only include one copy of each card. This keeps every game varied and creative.
- Your commander. One of your 100 cards is your commander, which must be a legendary creature. It starts in a special "command zone" and you can cast it repeatedly through the game.
- Colour identity. Your other 99 cards can only use the colours of your commander. A red-and-green commander means a red-and-green deck.
- Winning. You usually win by reducing each opponent's life from 40 to zero — or by dealing 21 "commander damage" with a single commander.
Step 1: Choose your commander
Choosing your commander is the most important decision you'll make, because it defines your deck's colours, strategy and personality. For your first deck, follow two rules of thumb:
- Pick a clear, linear strategy. Commanders that "do one thing" are easiest to build and play. Classic beginner-friendly choices include tribal commanders like a goblin leader (go wide with lots of small creatures) or an elf leader (swarm and ramp).
- Start with one or two colours. Three-colour decks have a huge card pool and can be intimidating. A mono-colour or two-colour commander is far easier for a first build.
Pick a commander whose theme genuinely excites you — you'll build and play it far more happily.
Step 2: Consider a preconstructed Commander deck
If building 100 cards from scratch sounds daunting, don't build from scratch yet. Wizards of the Coast releases preconstructed Commander decks ("precons") that are ready to play straight out of the box, in all sorts of themes. They are the single best way to start: you learn how the format flows, then upgrade gradually. Most experienced players still keep a few precons around.
Step 3: Build a solid deck structure
When you are ready to build or upgrade, use this beginner framework:
- Lands: about 34–42. Most decks want roughly 36–38 lands so you reliably hit your mana. Add a handful of "ramp" cards (mana rocks and dorks) to speed things up.
- Keep your mana curve low. Include significantly more cheap cards (one to three mana) than expensive ones (four-plus). Getting your plan going early is paramount.
- Cover the essentials. A good rough recipe: ~10 ramp, ~10 card draw, ~10 "removal" (ways to deal with threats), then the rest dedicated to your commander's strategy. These pillars keep any deck functional.
Step 4: Use the community (EDHREC)
You don't have to figure it all out alone. Free community tools like EDHREC show you exactly what other players run with your chosen commander — the most popular cards, themes and combos. It is the fastest way to find great cards in your colours and learn what works.
Keep it flexible — your deck is never "done"
Here's a freeing truth: a Commander deck is always a work in progress. You'll slot cards in and out as you play and discover how it really functions. That ongoing tinkering is half the fun, so don't stress about getting it perfect on day one.
Frequently asked questions about MTG Commander
Is Commander good for beginners? Yes — it's widely considered the most beginner-friendly format thanks to its social nature and ready-to-play precon decks.
How many cards are in a Commander deck? Exactly 100, including your commander, with only one copy of each non-basic-land card (singleton).
Do I need expensive cards to play Commander? No. A precon deck is affordable and fully playable, and budget builds are a beloved part of the format. Power level matters more than price.
What's the difference between Commander and EDH? They're the same thing — EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander) is the original name; Commander is the official one.
