What Is Riftbound? A Beginner's Guide to the League of Legends TCG (2026)

There's a new force in the trading card game world, and it comes from one of the biggest names in gaming. Riftbound is the official League of Legends trading card game from Riot Games — and since launching in late 2025, it has quickly become one of the most exciting new TCGs to pick up. If you love League, strategy games, or just want to get in early on something fresh, this guide explains how to play Riftbound and how to start in South Africa in 2026.

At The Battle Bunker, we're embracing Riftbound as one of the newest games on our tables, and players of every level are welcome to learn it with us.

What is Riftbound?

Riftbound is a trading card game for 2 to 4 players, set in the world of League of Legends. You choose your champion and lead them — alongside your army and your spells — to take control of battlefields and claim victory. It launched on 31 October 2025, making it a genuinely new game where everyone is still near the ground floor. That's rare, and it's a big part of the appeal.

How do you win in Riftbound?

Riftbound is all about conquering battlefields. The goal is to be the first to reach 8 points (or 11 points in a 2-vs-2 game). You earn points by moving your units onto battlefields, conquering them, and holding them into your next turn. This makes positioning and timing the heart of the game — it's less about pure damage and more about controlling key ground.

How a game of Riftbound is set up

Getting started is quick once you know the pieces. To set up, you:

  • Place your Champion Legend card face-up on the board. Your Legend defines which domains (colours) you can use.
  • Shuffle your main deck and your separate Rune deck (Runes power your cards).
  • Draw 4 cards from your main deck. You may mulligan up to 2 — put them on the bottom and draw replacements.
  • Set up two battlefields between the players. These are the focus of all the combat.

You'll also choose a Champion Unit that matches your Legend's name and at least one of its colours — your star champion, ready to deploy and fight.

What do you need to start playing Riftbound?

Because Riftbound is new and built with new players in mind, getting started is refreshingly simple.

The Proving Grounds box (best starting point)

The Proving Grounds box is the ideal entry product: it contains four playable decks, so you and your friends can open it and start battling immediately — no deck-building or extra purchases needed. It's the most beginner-friendly way in and great value for a group.

Champion Decks

Champion Decks (built around specific League champions) are another easy option — ready-to-play decks that let you pilot a favourite champion straight away and upgrade over time.

The essentials

Sleeves to protect your cards and a deck box are all you really need beyond a deck. As your collection grows, you can customise and refine.

What sets are available in 2026?

Riftbound is expanding fast. The current sets to know are:

  • Origins (2025) — the launch set.
  • Spiritforged (13 February 2026).
  • Unleashed (8 May 2026).

Because the game is so new, the card pool is still small and approachable — you're not facing a decade of cards to catch up on, which makes now the easiest time to start.

Where can you buy and play Riftbound in South Africa?

Riftbound product is increasingly available from South African game stores and TCG retailers, with more stock arriving as the game grows. The best way to actually learn it, though, is to play in person where someone can walk you through your first game.

Beginner tips for new Riftbound players

  • Think positioning, not just power. Points come from holding battlefields, so where your units are matters as much as how strong they are.
  • Learn your Legend. Your Legend sets your colours and game plan — build around it.
  • Start with Proving Grounds. Four ready decks means instant games and an easy group learning curve.
  • Play often. The game is new for everyone, so reps now put you ahead fast.
